The Impressions Gallery book fair
is an annual event. This year it took place on the 17th October-16th November. The opening weekend schedule was packed with talks and other activities. Activism seems to be a consistent theme this year, which is relatable given to what happened in summer (Black Lives Matter protest), as well as the on-going presidential votes in the USA.
Due to the pandemic this year the event was virtual which was a great use of technology such as Instagram and video chatting, zoom was also used throughout the day for the conversations. I did book a conversation with Antwan Sergeant - a New York based curator and author and he did talk about -The new black vanguard: between photography and fashion. However, this did not go to plan due to technical issues with the audio on my end, both with the phone app and my browser. Though I heard nothing but positive reviews about it on the galleries Instagram page throughout the talk.
Other artist used Instagram live that day which was easier than zoom in all honesty, as well as better access to the public. Overall, the talks were interesting and relatable, keeping the conversation about photography and social issues going. The artist has been selling their books on the Impression’s Gallery website for the last couple of weeks. I would suggest checking them out, it was a positive event, I would defiantly check it out next year too.
