The family Photographer

All 5 of these photographers look at the family discourse and the idea of memory as photography is used as a tool to “record memories” though most of the time its in place of the memories. However, each photographer’s topic of choice is slightly different as well as their approach to the subject.

Philip Toledano “days with my father” explores the family discourse as his dad is struggling with his memory, he never felt that his images where a chore he just simply took them the sake of making and all his images were taken on a context

Mathew Finn’s “mother “is a photobook that shows his mother slowly disappearing, becoming a shell of her former self because of her dementia. All images are black and white, all shot on film, However, the most captivating part of his images is the way he uses light almost as its own character as well as the narrative of his images .The light in some of the later images over exposes his mum giving the appearance of her fading away.

Richard Billingham “rays a laugh” is a photobook about his dad who is a recovering addict, All the shots are a mix of staged and not staged and are all documentary taken on a flash point and shoot, due to the aesthetic of the image.

Larry sultan “pictures from home” demonstrates his rocky relationship with his father and mother, he really works with the family discourse, his work is also multimodal mix of images from archive to those taken by him self on film. Within the archives he is very selective on what he wants the viewer to see ,to engage in the narrative but also cropping the image to allow the images continue with the narrative.
