The whole house is shaking

The image alone carries no power, it is the photographer that carries the power of the image as we decide what we want the viewer to see. We are the ones that bridge the connection of images through the way we and the camera interact with the subject. Honestly, its quite dangerous the amount of power the photographer gives to an image. Though it’s ironic as the camera is only a tool to record and the image itself is just pixels ,light or a simple piece of paper.

Tom Duffield’s work “the whole house is shaking “is a great example of how photography carries power and connection along with it.

“nothing records the effects of a sad life than the graphics of the human body”.-TOM DUFFIELD,2020

Tom Duffield’s work demonstrates the realization of mortality - the small amount of time to not resolve relationships and to be bitter about it. His work demonstrates an expression of care and respecting the boundaries of his family dynamic and the situation his family was put in due to his father’s drug addiction. His work also demonstrates how quickly he had to grow up and be an adult more than the adults. His work only took its direction as he focused in on his family’s relationship. Tom was connected to the subject biologically and through his own experiences, as he fully controlled his approach and narrative to his subject. His work shows the journey of his relationship with his farther and is just (now) feeling comfortable to shoot with him, several years later.

Duffield’s work “The whole house is shaking” is about Tom’s family living with/coping with an absence that was formed by his father’s addiction growing up. The title came from his sister’s old English homework. From Tom Duffield, I have learned to make something true to me and the enthusiasm of what you want to work on carries power for an audience to connect and show compassion.
