Lewis Khan is a photographer that I heard about from Max Ferguson when he came into talk to us about his personal practice as well as a writer and editor of the splash and grab zine, which focuses on photographers that have a story to tell. The zine is dedicated to photographers that have a series of images/project and is student friendly. Khan’s work has been featured multiple times in Max’s work, however I find his work with the NHS fascinating. Perhaps because I have a francisation with caregiving and medical photography, though I tend to be sensitive to it. Perhaps this is why I chose his work as an example for compassion and empathy. His work is extremely relevant right now as the NHS and the rest of the world try to fight COVID-19. His work shines a light on the NHS in a positive way as every one of his images shows a level of consideration and empathy given by him (the photographer) or his subjects demonstrating that he is not just there to document the NHS, though the purpose is to document and advertise.

There are also many technical elements in his images to aid with empathy, but the most notable is the light. The light is almost a character of its own in all his images giving the viewer connotations of hope, some are more subtle than others.
