The simplicity of Finn’s idea of photographing immediate family in a domestic setting. Finn works predominantly with film and through his process documents family life like a photo album, however he focuses on the everyday. Fascinated by the familiarity and troupes of the family without being as selective and chronological. Of course, he faced his own concerns about ethics throughout his career and was cautions about the censorship and implications his work could have cause in the domestic setting. It natural to feel such as his works are artefact of love showing it through a camera and as photographers, we all question our own morals at some point in our careers. Mathew is fascinated with the use of reflections and shadows caused by windows and mirrors as well as photographic habits and the inside and outside in some of his practice for ease but was also influenced by Chris Killip and his use of modernism.

Finn was always documenting therefore took his camera everywhere, though he has multiple duration projects an several members of his family, Uncle is in the process of being published Wife and son are still in progression. Though my favourite of his project is mother. He also always photographed from wherever he existed at the time, therefore being able to engage with the conversation and bridge the distance the camera automatically bestows on the photographer and subject.

Mother is personal to me as I can relate to it, especially in the later stages of the project where his mother fell and suffered with delirium which was later diagnosed as mixed dementia .my nana is also suffering with vascular dementia and the images of his empty childhood home, was the start o my project of my nana. When his mother moved out of the home and then fell was the end of a collaborative process between him and his mother. He kept the most private moments within the family which I can appreciate and relate to.
Mother in its earlier stages documented his mother doing the little things and was interested in how many different images you could get in one space. The project also demonstrated the process of aging which is something that happens every day. But also shows how people change.
