WandaVison

Updated: Mar 16, 2021

*spoilers ahead*

Marvel’s new show has been a hot topic for the last couple of weeks. ‘Wanda Vision’, streaming on Disney+ follows Wanda Maximoff and vision in an alternative reality. Each episode is inspired by the sitcoms of that decade e.g. episode 1 is based on the 50s and the sitcoms of the decade. Wanda puts herself and the town of Westview into this alternative reality, however this reality is not what it seems and delves further into the scarlet witch and visions backstories found in stan lees comics.

Just like any other marvel series or movie there is quite a bit of special effects and most of them are CGI. The latest episode is something I would like to pick apart today. Episode 8 “previously on” is a clear indication of Wanda vision now being a tv series. The basic plot of this episode is that Agatha Harkness or Agnes as she called herself in previous episodes, Wanda’s next-door neighbour, is a witch and is trying to get to the source of Wanda’s powers by making her relive the most traumatic parts of her life. We find out that she possesses chaos magic and gets her superhero name, the scarlet witch, In the process Agatha is holding billy and tommy captive. We also find out that sword is now weaponizing vision and powering him up. Through Wanda’s trauma comes the end scene where she has morphed her new reality , the colour changes to black and white and is styled like the 50s which is what we see earlier in the first episode. However, the camera pans upwards toward moving image and industry lights in the rafters indicating that she is on a set of some kind. Not going to lie I got excited when I saw this, as I love images that show the subject but also pan out to show some of the location. In the case of Wanda vision I do think this scene aided the narrative as it complements the synopsis of the show, as well as demonstrating what goes on in Wanda’s head.

I find the black and white snippet of the scene fascinating, honestly, I love the whole show as scarlet witch is one of my favourite characters from the MCU, I’m getting of topic again.

Everything is so considered within the frame, even the outfit choices. The wardrobe team specifically chose certain colours of fabric to complement the black and white to texturize the grey and keeping in mind the greyscale. I could completely analysis the shot however, I don’t think I have enough time.so I suggest you watch the show.
