Zanjir

Mahmoodian’s work poetic just like the way she talks, as she works with images, poems and archives. Questioning the ideas of identities, home and bridging the personal and political. She explores memory, exile, dreams and reality through her images.

Shenasnameh (2007-2010)

Zanjir 2019: was published in 2019.this project in particular started in 2004 when mahmoodian started archive research in Golestan museum in central Tehran. A fascination with a past king that struggled with political networking but could express his opinion through art. Through the archives she discovered the women that met the king’s acquaintance discovering how the women were represented as 2 different people, who they were in public and who the where in private. Mahmoodian was also interested in forming a narrative of someone that lived in the past but still existed in the present.

Zanjir (2004-2019)

She came back to the project 10 years later the idea of people concealing their identities still and evident theme in her project, however sitting on the floor with 300 negatives surrounded by memories of home and the early part of the project she found that she knew the faces but not. The people in the images anymore.

She describes “photography as something that is able to repeat what could never be repeated and is an imaginary conversation between reality and imagination, a narrative that is created.”-Amack mahmoodian,2021.
